Day 1: “O lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when i sit down and when i rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.” 1-2
We as human beings have a deep longing to be known and loved. We instinctively fend for acceptance, love, and recognition. But our weak hearts would more readily fasten together an idol than turn to our one true Source for all our satisfaction. As a daily reminder we can meditate on David’s words and say “O Lord, you have searched me and known me”. Surely we will find the perspective we need and turn to Him who is our God.
The Lord knows His creation with a divine intimacy. His knowledge is expansive, comprehensive, and complete. In a word, it is perfect. He knows us better than we know ourselves, for He made us with His own hands. The world boasts of its scientific and medical advancements. What has been accomplished in the furthering of our own knowledge and capabilities has, through our own fallenness, become the prop with which our pride is erected. But what about God? We must look to Him who is the fount of all knowledge and wisdom! And this great and awesome God has searched us and known us. His mind is acquainted with our every thought. His eye perceives our every movement. His loving hand directs our every step. He knows both the thoughts and intentions of the heart. We can say with Jeremiah, “But you know me, O Lord; You see me; and you examine my heart’s attitude toward You” (Jer. 12:3). Like a spotless window the Lord sees through to our deepest emotions, fears, and desires. In the same way that a watchmaker is uniquely familiar with every lug, crown, clasp, and bezel, so our God knows our composition perfectly. He has searched us and known us.
Whether resting or rising, He discerns our thoughts from afar. He says to us, “But I know your sitting down, and your going out and your coming in” (2 Kings 19:27). All day and every day He is with us. He doesn’t miss a thing. When our hearts are broken He understands more than any human can, and invites us to find solace in Him. When we are tempted, He hears the debate that goes on in our heads between the flesh and the spirit. He fights for us. Let us trust, rest, and find comfort today in the God who knows us.
Reflection
Take time today to consider the perfect and infinite knowledge of God. His ability to see all things, know all things, and understand all things. Glory in the greatness of the God who knows and loves you. Remember that we have a great High Priest who can sympathize with all our struggles, needs, desires, and temptations. Brothers and sisters, look to Him today.
Prayer
Lord, you are worthy of all worship and adoration. Help me to see more clearly how great, holy, and personal you are. Help me to entrust all things to you, and walk in a way that practically reflects my dependence on you. Help me, Lord, to be satisfied in you alone as the one who sees and knows me. In Christ’s name I ask, amen.
